It’s still fall, but by the weekend the weather forecasters are predicting temperatures so low that it will feel like we are in the dead of winter. Before the first blast of arctic air arrives, take the next few days to prepare your house for the cold. I combed through some of my previous posts on winterizing your home and conserving energy to come up with a checklist to help you prepare the house for frigid temperatures.
Cold Weather Checklist:
- Seal the Cracks -Use caulk to seal up any areas around windows that is allowing air to enter your home and energy to leave it.
- Hang Heavy Drapes-Thick drapes will help to insulate your home against cold air and drafts from windows.
- Layer up on Insulation-An extra layer of insulation in the attic will make your entire home warmer and save money on your heating bill. Remember heat rises but this time of year you do not want it to escape through the roof.
- Wrap up Your Pipes-Wrapping pipes in insulation prevents freezing and bursting.
- Use a Smart Thermostat-A smart thermostat allows you to program and operate the thermostat from your smart phone or tablet. Instead of having the heat running constantly, so that you do not have to walk into a cold house, program it to power on an hour before you arrive.
